The Science of Line & Art / Jill Pelto
In this secondary visual arts lesson, students research a local or global environmental issue and a corresponding data set (coordinate pairs) to chart a line graph on an X-Y axis. This line then serves as their horizon line in their artwork to divide their sky and land within their mixed-media landscapes. This project is inspired by the work of scientist and artist, Jill Pelto.

Art Movement Make-Up
Students research an art movement and create a journal spread that includes their research about the movement and how they will transform their face into this art style, using professional face paint. Students then work in teams to complete self-portraits, featuring their make-up and three-point lighting. Students edit their portraits in Adobe Photoshop and present to their peers. This lesson is perfect to pair with Halloween and the Day of the Dead holidays.

Minecraft Self-Portraits
Students create a self-portrait in the style of Minecraft by using one-point perspective. In addition to creating their name in block letters and turning themselves into geometric forms, students also create a two-layer portrait in relief, adding an additional dimension to their Minecraft-inspired world.
